Solid vs. Pattern

As much as I love patterns, I still gravitate towards solid fabrics on big pieces of upholstery.  Don't get me wrong,  I adore a striped chair or a damask ottoman, but there is something so crisp and clean about linen covered furniture.  A lot of people buy solid thinking they will tire of a pattern quickly.  What are your thoughts?  If money weren't an issue, would you spring for patterned pieces of furniture?  Or would you still add pattern and color with accents?

  1. I even get sick of patterned throw pillows within a few years, so I can't imagine how'd I'd feel about a patterned couch. I also have horrible memories of an awful print my mom put on a couch (if I recall, at my urging) when I was a child. It was awful and dated the couch way before it should have.

For very large pieces of furniture, such as a couch, I think there are so many amazing solid colored, but nicely textured fabrics that unless you plan to redecorate more often, offer a great option to a print. I do love a great print on a chair though!

  4. I'm so fickle when it comes to pillows that I would always go with a solid. I might consider a tufted sofa or one with more unique detailing if money were no object, but I'd rather have the fun of playing with pattern in my pillows or throw blankets.

  5. yes, if money were no object, I would have a lovely kilim covered arm chair or settee. I would adore the visual impact and am quite sure it would be ages before I was ready for a change. But alas, this is not the case with my budget...I splurge on pretty patterned pillow covers. :)

  7. Hmmmm! I have had both, I have found that I like stripes so it is pattern for me with solid chairs. Then I can add any patterned pillow to change the look. I usually like a tight stripe and it almost has a solid affect but the light and dark seems to hide dirt better for me.

  10. I'm more of a solid type of gal:-). Also, it depends on what type of patterns-i don't usually like floral patterns, but i love maramekko. I tend to use my accessories to add texture and keep the bigger pieces neutral. Also, thanks for stopping by my blog!

  12. As with most things, if money were no object go bold! You can always recover it when you're tired of it. As for the real world, I usually like to recommend solid sofas. I even have had a linen covered sofa like the one pictured for 10 years and still love it (well, not exactly love it. It has giant rolled arms, ugh) But I really do still love the fabric after all these years. I have a husband now though and he's a bit harder on the upholstery. I will eventually have to give up the lovely linen.

  13. Wow, seems like the consensus is that solid is the way to go, unless you win the lottery!
