Rental Tip: The Accent Wall

The accent wall is by no means a new design trend, however, don't overlook it if you're a renter.  Sometimes landlords will allow you to paint your apartment as long as you return it to white before you move.  But painting an entire room or apartment while you're packing and planning a move is no one's idea of easy.  So instead, consider painting the wall behind your bed a color instead of the whole room.  Or paint the wall you see as you enter the living room a bold color.  It will be a lot easier to paint one wall rather than a whole room when your lease is up.

  1. I love the color grey in the first photo...not too dark, not too light

  2. I'm so glad you mentioned this Erica. A lot of people don't know it. It will make the decor in an apartment so much more personal.

  3. I usually don't like accent walls as they look like an after thought or laziness, but the red one above is AWESOME! The base molding being the same color looks more deliberate and complete. LOVE it, thanks for breaking my design prejudice. :)

  4. Good idea. I'm also fond of the use of ribbon to add a design to a wall. It's easy to apply with liquid starch and pulls off in a snap without leaving any telltale signs that it's been there. I added stripes to my daughter's bedroom when she was about 8 and claimed that lavender would be her favorite color forever-that lasted a year or two.

  5. I agree Valerie, I'm never been a fan of accent walls either, but these 3 images work for me and are beautiful. And yes, the red wall is not so harsh looking with the molding painted. Thanks!

  6. I love accent walls! We actually rented in a complex that offered "accent wall services", where you could choose one of like 7 colors they had and they'd come in and paint the wall of your choice. We did not take advantage of this, but I thought it was cool.

Our condo that we're renting from a private owner, however, is painted like 8 different colors, but they're all so close in tone that it's hard to tell at first. It's pretty strange, but luckily it's not like 8 different crazy colors; they're all neutral!
